The competitive CallofDutyrostermania simply won’t stop. Indeed, every team is trying to get better in the ultimate goal of being victorious this year. Accordingly, one of the biggest changes of the year just took place – LA Thieves Huke is now official and has blown the community’s mind. Let’s dive right in!
LA Thieves Huke – Dallas Gifting?
Earlier this week, Dallas Empire decided to drop Cuyler “Huke” Garland. Instead, the substitute of Tyler “FeLo” Johnson has made his way in. Naturally, this change is incredibly controversial due to the fact that Dallas Empire were performing well – second in the standings.
After a week of rumours, LA Thieves Huke was finally confirmed on Twitter:
Why is Huke such as big deal? Competing for the past 6 years, the young player has won champions across multiple FPS titles. Namely, his break-out year was last year, winning Call of Duty Championship with Dallas Empire. That’s why LA Thieves were willing to spend the big bucks and sign him
Who will he be replacing? Accordingly, the lineup has made way for the youngster by placing Thomas “TJHaLy” Haly onto the bench.
Both Dallas Empire and LA Thieves will be looking to work off of this change. Let’s see how both rosters respond to the incoming weeks of competition.
A report has recently surfaced from Dexerto journalist Adam Fitch stating that Co-owner of NRG, H3CZ, is looking to rebuild the OpTic Gaming Brand. Here below is the report:
H3CZ looking to rebuild OpTic Gaming Brand – Why?
According to the report above, Hector “H3CZ” Rodriguez is “aiming to divest from NRG” and rebuild OpTic Gaming. Reasons were not disclosed, but we know that H3CZ always treated OpTic as his child, and he’s probably interested in bringing it back into what it used to be.
The Juggle of OpTic ownership
H3CZ first lost ownership of OpTic Gaming to Immortals Gaming Club in June of 2019, and with this move he went to NRG as Co-owner and Co-CEO, alongside Andy Miller. With the help of NRG, H3CZ remained intact with the COD community. As NRG entered the COD scene with the Chicago Huntsmen brand in September of 2019. Overall the team was quite successful, winning a couple of the weekly tournaments, and placing 3rd in both the 2020 season and playoffs. A few months back, October 2020 to be exact, H3CZ re-acquired the OpTic Gaming brand, and rebranded the Chicago Huntsmen into the OpTic Chicago.
With the acquisition of this legendary brand, H3CZ has multiple options for its future. With investors willing to help and aid the future of OpTic only time will tell what will follow. What is certain is that we should be expecting an announcement from Hector very soon.
What does this mean?
This could mean a whole lot, but also could mean very little. Realistically, it all depends on what plans Hector has for its future. Whether it be just as a content creation team, or turn it back into a full-functioning organisation.
As we previewed, the CDLStage3 event has already been incredible and only one week has passed! With metas shifting and the rankings shaking, it’s all very exciting. Accordingly, we’ve prepared a CDL Stage 3 Week 1 Recap below for you all to enjoy!
CDL Stage 3 Week 1 – Key Matchups
Across the past weekend, a tonne of matches have flooded the scene. Indeed, to help you out, we’ll be listing some of the key matches and explaining their importance:
Los Angeles Thieves vs Seattle Surge (3-2) – a heartbreaking reverse sweep against the Seattle Surge, LA Thieves are here to play. It’s without question that this roster of young guns is deadly and is aiming for the top seed of the group with this performance
Minnesota Rokkr vs Florida Mutineers (1-3) – honeymoon period over? Just like that, Rokkr get rocked by the Mutineers and they’re new starter of “Havok” from off the bench. It’ll be interesting to see where these two teams sit in the future – is Rokkr losing it?
Atlanta FaZe vs New York Subliners (2-3) – the number one key matchup of the weekend. In this match up, the awaiting debut of the young gun of “Hydra” led NYSL to an incredible victory over the shaky leaders of FaZe. It is without question that this was an unbelievable game leaving shockwaves in the community.
Just like that, competitive CallofDutyis back with another stage of competition. Following a couple weeks since the Stage 2 Finals, we’re back for some more action. Indeed, the CDL Stage 3 2021 looks to be an exciting season of competition – with shifting rankings and storylines throughout! Read on to learn How to Watch!
Event Background
The third stage of the competition picks up where the previous stages left off. Following the triumph of Toronotu Ultra in the Finals, teams are anxious to re-establish themselves. Specifically, the 12 teams will fight from the 22nd April all the way until 9th May.
Here, they will earn points to seed into the Stage 3 Major afterwards. As a light reminder, here are the 12 franchised teams competing in the 2021 Call of Duty League season:
Atlanta FaZe
Chicago OpTic
Dallas Empire
Florida Mutineers
London Royal Ravens
Los Angeles Guerrillas
Minnesota ROKKR
New York Subliners
Los Angeles Thieves
Paris Legion
Seattle Surge
Toronto Ultra
Seeding is everything for the regular season – the prize pool will come into play at the Playoffs.
Format
As I’ll reiterate, the format is similar to previous stages of the season. Across the next month, Group Play will involve two groups of 6. Within these groups, BO5 matches will determine a final standing prior to seeding into the Major.
Once again, the CDL has decided to group of weekends, with a focus on each team:
22nd April – 25th April – LDN Home Series
29th April – 2nd May – Paris Home Series
6th May -9th May – Dallas Home Series
Here’s a look at the Snake Drafted groups for this upcoming season:
Schedule for the CDL Stage 3 2021

Following the results of the stage 2 finals, predictions for this upcoming event are certainly spicy, to say the least. We’ll proceed by approaching each group with specific predictions.
Group A
Top 2 – Dallas Empire, Toronto Ultra
3-4th – Minnesota Rokkr, Florida Mutineers
5-6th – Los Angeles Guerillas, Paris Legion
It’s tough to make predictions like this – the competition is so insanely close and with recent roster changes, anything can happen. Supposedly, Florida, Paris and LAG are all headed into the Stage with new rosters.
While that seems great for the rosters, it means they’re going against rosters which have had time to mature, practice and master some strategies. One thing everyone’s keen to see is whether or not Toronto Ultra will be keeping up the same dominant performance leading to their crowning last Stage Finals. Can Rokkr and Empire hang with them?
Group B
Top 2 – Atlanta FaZe, OpTic Chicago
3-4th – Los Angeles Thieves, Seattle Surge
5-6th – London Royal Ravens, New York Subliners
Once again, the competition is tougher than ever. At this point in time, the favourites are definitely FaZe and OpTic, with both seeking redemption following the last event.
Meanwhile, things get spicy further down – I’d like to give the edge to LA Thieves and Seattle Surge who looked promising at the Stage II Finals. The bottom two are both teams making changes heading into the event, so I cannot confidently give them too much credit before seeing them play.
Simply mind-numbing! The CDLStageIIMajor this past week is one of the most phenomenal events in the history of competitive Call of Duty. Indeed, as a fan of the scene, it was incredible to view the 12 teams fight over the $500,000 once again – read on for a quick recap!
CDL Stage II Major – Toronto Ultra Make History
Toronto Ultra are your champions and their journey to this point is phenomenal. Nobody, not even us, could predict their victory, with only 9 votes on a Twitter poll by the CDL actually going in their favour.
Let’s observe the journey of these brilliant players:
Starting in winners, they took down OpTic Chicago in dominant fashion
In the next round, they lost to Atlanta FaZe, falling to the Loser’s Bracket
Here, they take down LAT, ROKKR, and Dallas to get to the grand finals
Accordingly, it was at the grand final, with a BO9 format, that a legendary series took place. Indeed, a back and forth battle between themselves and favourites FaZe. Overall, Ultra managed to dominate and snag a victory nobody could see coming.
Besides an incredible win, other moments such as ROKKR beating OpTic are forever stapled into history as insane and unique moments for the competitive scene. Notably, in terms of history, Toronto Ultra is only the second-ever all-European roster to win an event!
Here’s how the current standings look for the regular season:
Overall, Stage II has been incredible. In all aspects, the competition has grown and our leaderboards are more complex then ever. We can’t wait for the rest of the season.
These past few days, we’ve had to be careful of any April Fool’s jokes made by esports organization. However, the LA Thieves roster change is certainly no joke, with veteran player of Austin “Slasher” Liddicoat being offed to the bench for the first time. Indeed – here’s the big scoop.
LA Thieves Roster – 4 Submachine Guns?
Stage2so far has been really tough on the LA Thieves roster – being handed out losses from multiple teams and losing their former position as a competent team. Indeed, this continued to happen even after swapping out “Temp” with “Venxm”. Here’s the new fix to the solution:
Carlos “Venom” Hernandez
Thomas “TJHaly” Haly
Kenny “Kenny” Williams
Zack “Drazah” Jordan
Having sat on the bench for an entire season so fire, this is ‘Drazah’s shot to perform after an impressive season last year in Modern Warfare.
Yet, nobody saw this coming – benching a veteran like “Slasher” is quite surprising, however, I think I know what’s going on here. It seems that LA Thieves is following Toronto Ultra’s decision.
By swapping your Assault Rifle player, it changes the entire dynamic for the team. This is likely what the LA Thieves need instead of swapping another submachine gun. Supposedly, “Kenny” will now pick it up and this team is desperate for success at the next event.
The CallofDutyLeague this year is proving to be the most competitive the scene has ever been. Indeed, it’s this simple idea which is on everyone’s mind heading into the CDL Stage 2 Major 2021. Yes, there are top dogs and underdogs, but everyone has a fair chance at the $500,000 should they show up and play their game. Read on for an episode of How to Watch for this week’s event!
Event Background
This Stage 2 event is specifically the second stage of the second season of the Call of Duty League. The past three weeks of competition have built up to this event – all teams have earned their seeds into the double elimination bracket. Here’s a reminder of the 12 franchises competing at the event:
Atlanta FaZe
New York Subliners
Toronto Ultra
London Royal Ravens
LA Guerrillas
LA Thieves
Minnesota Rokkr
OpTic Chicago
Dallas Empire
Seattle Surge
Paris Legion
Florida Mutineers
Since the last stage, multiple roster changes and in-game meta changes have properly shaped up and deepened the level of competition in the league. Note that teams aren’t just competing for money, but also for further CDL points to help their claim to further events.
Format
As I’ll reiterate, the event will enjoy a classic double elimination bracket format. For those unaware, this means that teams in the Losers’ bracket can only suffer one loss before dropping out of the event. Meanwhile, a loss in the Winners’ bracket will result in falling to the Losers’ Bracket – a format which encourages competitive opportunities.
Schedule for the CDL Stage 2 Major 2021 (CET)
With all 12 teams gearing up for an incredible competition across the five days. Accordingly, below you can find the precise schedule for the games across the first three days, showing off every team’s very first encounter. Indeed, the time zone is CET:

In terms of predictions and expectations, they’ve certainly shaped up since Stage 1. Accordingly, I’ll provide a short list of the top 5 together with some commentary to show off where everyone sits:
Atlanta FaZe – properly undefeated for the majority of Stage 2, these red giants took care of business in Group A with all four players within the top 10 K/Ds of the stage so far. Taking them down will be very difficult as they hunger for another stage win.
Minnesota Rokkr – a pleasant surprise from Stage 1, the signing of “Standy” has flipped this team on its head, taking down their Group in a shocking manner. Do they have what it takes to face off against FaZe?
Dallas Empire – although having just lost in their last match-up, the Empire have consistently played well and seem more reliable than the opposition of OpTic Chicago for example.
OpTic Chicago – at one point they suffered an 0-6 scoreline in maps although they bounced back against Dallas. Yes, when they’re on point they are an incredible team, but will they show up at the event?
New York Subliners – putting them here is a little tough for me as the competition is just so tight as the team can hang with the best of the best
Furthermore, the likes of Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles Guerillas and Florida are some of the more competitive teams. Meanwhile, London, Paris and Thieves have some serious work to do.
When thinking of our next topic for StateoftheCommunity, we thought that Call of Duty deserved some of our attention. Accordingly, with the new season and the new game, there has already been a tonne of improvement from last season. However, one issue which remainsis the discussion over CoD Gentlemen’s Agreements. If you’re unaware, we’ve got an entire discussion below for you!
What is a Gentlemen’s Agreement?
According to the internet, here’s a standard definition of a ‘Gentlemen’s Agreement’:
A gentlemen’s agreement is an informal and legally non-binding agreement between two or more parties. It is typically oral, but may be written or simply understood as unspoken agreement by convention or though mutually-beneficial etiquette. The essence of a gentlemen’s agreement is that it relies upon the honor of the parties for its fulfillment, rather than in being in any way enforceable.
Webster Dictionary
Keep the above definition in mind, as it will help in understanding the entire situation.
CoD Gentlemen’s Agreements – The Good
As an esport, Call of Duty changes every year thanks to a new game with new in-game mechanics. What doesn’t change is the fact that CoD is primarily an arcade shooter. Accordingly, not every gameplay feature is entirely fair and should definitely not be involved in competitive play.
That’s where CoD Gentlemen’s Agreements come into play. Accordingly, usually the professional players get together in one shape or form and agree on certain maps, guns and in-game mechanics such as abilities which should not be used. Reasons could be due to affecting specific roles, poor viewership experience, cheap tactics and moreso. A term which is thrown around a lot is ‘competitive integrity’.
Here are a few things that CoD Gentlemen’s Agreements have helped solve for this year specifically with Cold War:
Banning the use of the current weapons: Sniper Rifles, AK-47, XM4, KSP 45
Disallowing attachments such as: Thermal sights, all Body attachments and others
Setting the score of scorestreaks to higher point thresholds to prevent spamming
Disabling settings such as Auto Tac Sprint to prevent unfair movement advantage to SMGs
As you can see, all of these have served a role to shape up how the game plays right now. With regards to maps, that is moreso entirely up to the event organizers to communicate with the players on what is and what isn’t working.
Despite how helpful they can be, there is reasonable doubts and disdain over the use of CoD Gentlemen’s Agreements.
CoD Gentlemen’s Agreements – The Bad
I’ll be presenting the points of contention through a bullet point list:
Lack of enforcement – with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, the lack of enforcement definitely makes a GA more of a recommendation. While it is very rare for a professional to break a GA due to the potential repercussions, young aspiring players in lesser divisions with nothing to lose have, in the past, intentionally broken GAs in order to gain an advantage
A lack of purely impartial decision making – think about it; if you’re an SMG player who’s finding a lot of success recently, you’ll naturally be against a particular SMG GA and if you’re a struggling AR player, you’ll be all for it. Furthermore, if your team is finding great success in a current meta, you’ll be opposed to any shifting changes which might make staying at the top harder. Since the players decide, it’s impossible to form a completely objective opinion – this is where the greatest contention lies with players accusing one another of abusing GAs to their advantage
They shouldn’t exist – in essence, all of this discussion and arguing should not take place in the first place. Yes, while there are good intentions between the players to make a fairer game, such decisions should be in the hands of the developers and event organizers to make it fair.
Concluding Thoughts
While I’ve entirely focused on the Call of Duty side of things, I’m certain that the concept of GA’s isn’t exclusive to this scene. Regardless, the principle points remain. Indeed, the intention to make the game more ‘competitively viable’ is great, but such powerful decisions should not be taken by the same people competing for the big money.
In my opinion, a board of impartial Call of Duty experts who are not actively competing or affiliated could solve this ongoing issue.
However, at the end of the day, the community doesn’t necessarily care. All we want to do is watch the best players of the world go toe-to-toe – the details aren’t all that important.
There’s been quite a buzz over at the head office of ActivisionBlizzard. Specifically, esports scenes such as that of CallofDutyare concerned with a recent happening. Supposedly, the Activision Layoff of several employees is due to the company’s shift towards organizing online events. Is this a cause for concern? Let’s find out.
To begin with, here’s what Tony Petitti as the president of sports at ActivisionBlizzard told The Esports Oberver:
We learned a lot last year in terms of how the leagues can be structured for online play, and we’ll look to carry forward the best practices from that.
In terms of timing, it’s a reaction to the realities of how the leagues are playing and what resources we need to allocate to best serve the league, owners, teams and fans.”
So what’s going on with the Activision Layoff? Basically, the organization is realizing that online events will likely be the rage for a couple years, and are engineering themselves towards this market shift.
Hosting both the Overwatch League and CallofDutyLeague online, there seem to be longer plans in place.
Activision Layoff – The End of LAN events?
No, it simply isn’t. I have to address the panicked Reddit posts saying that we’ll never have in-person events again. As a business, Activision need to adapt to current demand, and there’s no demand for in-person events at the moment. However, once the world gets back on track, it’s undoubted that live events will be the first thing on the menu.
The London Royal RavensCDL team has announced that they are adding PaulEhx to their starting roster heading into the 2nd stage of the league. Here is their announcement:
London Royal Ravens adding PaulEhx – Who is he?
20-year-old Paul “PaulEhx” Avila is an American professional CoD player. He started his career in 2019 under Athaim gaming, and slowly moved on to a variety of rosters in 2020. With him actively competing for just 2 years, he could be considered as an inexperienced upcoming talent. Now he has an excellent opportunity with the Ravens to showcase his abilities.
The team has recently made another roster change which involved Alexxx heading into an inactive position within the team. This change involved the addition of Zed, and so far it hasn’t really made an impact on their results.
It’s no secret that the team has been struggling for a very long time. In the CDL Stage 1, the London Royal Ravens finished dead last with no matches won. And just recently, they took part in the Stage 1 Major, where they finished in 11th/12th place.
With the 2nd stage of the Call of Duty League set to kick off on the 18th of March, we can only hope that the London Royal Ravens adapt quickly to improve and perform better.
