With the competitive Dota 2 scene anxiously awaiting The International later this year, there are still events to look forward to. Event Background

Credits: ESL Dota 2 Twitter

As I’ll reiterate, this event is not a component of the Dota Pro Circuit – the seeds for TI10 have already been finalized.

Instead, this is ESL throwing $400,000 on the line for 12 teams to compete for. Running from the 21st to the 29th August, the online event should be a great opportunity for some of the best teams in the world to enjoy some practice before the biggest event of the year.

Speaking of which, the following are the invited and qualified participating teams:

  • Alliance
  • Team Liquid
  • Team Spirit
  • T1
  • Thunder Predator
  • PSG.LGD
  • beastcoast
  • Virtus.pro
  • Tundra Esports
  • SG esports

  • Closed Qualifier – Team Empire, Creepwave

Focusing on the European and CIS region, the competitors will definitely be making the most of this opportunity.

Format

In terms of format, the format makes the most of the week spread of competition.

Starting things off is a Group Stage. Here, the 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six. Accordingly, a single round-robin will then play out with BO2 matches.

Credits: ESL Dota 2 Twitter

Placements into the Playoffs will be dictated as follows:

  • Top 2 of the group – Upper Bracket
  • 3-4th of the group – Lower Bracket
  • 5-6th of the group – Eliminated

As you can imagine, the Playoffs involve a classic double-elimination bracket with BO3 matches throughout. This stands except for the BO5 Grand Finalto close things off.

As of right now, the groups are yet to be determined but should be in the coming days.

Running back the clock for recent performances, one of the most recent events is none other than ESL One Summer 2021 from a couple months ago.

Featuring many of the invited teams, the following is how the competition stacked up back then:

  1. T1
  2. Virtus.pro
  3. Alliance
  4. OG
  5. Vikin.gg
  6. Quincy Crew

Although not all the teams were present, it does give us an idea with regards to the potential top 4 teams here – T1, Virtus.pro, Alliance and PSG.LGD.

SingaporeMajor
Credits: ESL

Accordingly, PSG.LGD didn’t compete at ESL One Summer 2021, at roughly the same time they walked away as champions of the WePlay AniMajor.

Also note that all four of these mentioned teams will be making their way to The International together with beastcoast and Thunder Predator who are also competing.

Bearing all this in mind, we fully expect these teams to try their absolute hardest in order to make the most of this opportunity to practice before the big event.

In terms of a winner, it likely sits between PSG.LGD, Virtus.pro and Alliance, while the likes of OG, beastcoast and Thunder Predator will likely contend for lower positions.

EHOME Dota 2 Roster Now Inactive – Except for xNova

When it comes to Chinese Dota competition, EHOME are one of the staples of the scene. However, with a poor season this year, the team is being rethought. Accordingly, a recent announcement regarding the EHOME Dota 2 Roster has the majority of the roster being moved to an inactive role. Read on to learn more!

As of right now, the decision being made is behind discussions between players and organization. Why? Well, there are a few reasons as to why this team isn’t looking to the future:

  • Placed 6th at the regional Dota Pro Circuit China Season 2 event last month
  • Missing out on The International 10 after placing second at the China Qualifier

Indeed, missing a seed by one spot is definitely painful. However, it grants the team full liability to look towards the next season.

Yet, there’s more. Not all the team is going inactive. Indeed, one player in the form of Yap “xNova” Jian Wei has decided to move on and step away from the organization. Such a talented player with a strong history will surely find a team to compete with next season.

Do note that the EHOME Dota 2 Roster is only one of many teams that will be forced to make changes after not making it to The International.

Hellbear Smashers currently leading the D2CL 2021

The event has been going on for a week now, and Hellbear Smashers are currently leading the D2CL 2021 (Dota 2 Champions League). Here’s how they’ve been so successful:

Match Briefing

They kicked the event off with a dominant win over PuckChamp on Day 1. The next day, they took on Team Unique, which they also beat 2-0. On the third day they took on the newly reformed AS Monaco Gambit lineup, and as everyone expected, the Smashers dominated that series too. On day 4 they had no games, but on day 5 they faced off the Fantastic Five squad, and beat them 2-0. Day 6 was another break for Hellbear Smashers, and on Day 7 they took on V-Gaming. This series was the only one that gave them a challenge, as V-Gaming were the only team to take a map away from the Smashers. Unfortunately their performance wasn’t enough to topple them and give them their first loss.

Hellbear Smashers currently leading the D2CL 2021 – Current Standings

  1. Hellbear Smashers – 5-0 – 10-1
  2. Team Unique – 4-1 – 8-3
  3. Chicken Fighters – 3-1 – 6-2
  4. Nemiga Gaming – 3-1 – 6-3
  5. PuckChamp – 3-2 – 6-6
  6. V-Gaming – 2-2 – 5-4
  7. Winstrike Team – 1-4 – 4-8
  8. Spider Pigzs – 1-4 – 4-9
  9. Fantastic Five – 1-4 – 2-8
  10. AS Monaco Gambit – 1-5 – 4-11

This European and CIS mix team of Ace, Stormstormer, GeneRaL, Gilgir, and tOfu has been a dominant force in the event so far. From what it looks like, the Hellbear Smashers are confirmed to take part in the main event. Could they continue with their current momentum and go all the way to win it all?

Vikin.gg Dota 2 Roster – Dropped Off the Scene

It’s that time of year for competitive Dota 2 for teams that didn’t make it to The International. Indeed, while others compete at the largest esports event in history, some teams are left behind for a chance next year. One such team is Vikin.gg. Accordingly, news has the Vikin.gg Dota 2 Roster being dropped entirely.

Vikin.gg Dota 2 Roster – Breaking Up After 2 Years

This roster from Europe is one which has been the staple of the community for two years now. Indeed, in that time the team has kept, for the most part, the same core team and sticking to swapping fourth and fifth players.

Bearing that in mind, the following Twitter post came out of the blue with no explanation:

Credits: Vikin.gg Twitter

Usually, most of the time when changes like this happen it’s for the same reason. Change is needed because results aren’t being achieved. However, check out some of the recent performances for this team:

  • ESL One Summer 2021 – 5-6th
  • Pinnacle Cup – 3rd
  • DreamLeague Season 15 – 1st
  • EPIC League Season 3 Division 1 – 1st

Clearly, the issue for qualification for The International with this team was earning enough points at the right time.

Although they had strong performances at lower tier events, struggles at more important events hindered their rankings in the Dota Pro Circuit.

Indeed, the entire staff and players have been set as free agents. We’re curious to see where they land and what roster the organization puts forward next season, if any at all.
