Roughly a few days ago, we covered the past year of competitive PUBG Mobile. Indeed, it’s at the top mobile esport in the world. However, this time we’re taking a step back to review their major competitor’s year – read on as we dive into competitive Free Fire 2020/21!
Peaking at the Right Time – Competing with PUBG Mobile?
What’s curious about competitive Free Fire is that it was released all the way back in August 2017.
However, only recently has the title really caught fire these past few years. Indeed, it’s mainly this past year and a half that the mobile esport has truly come about as a true competitor to PUBG Mobile.
In this regard, it shares a lot of similarities with the title. For example, both esports can be respected for hosting an incredible number of first-party events. Accordingly, it might be that Garena hosts more.
Anyways, the following dive into the competitive year should be an interesting revelation to determine how close the title is to PUBG Mobile.
Fact Sheet – The Best Free Fire Esports Events Over the Year – Competitive Free Fire 2020/21
Before we go ahead, let’s just once again thank Esports Charts for making all of the viewership details public for use. Otherwise, we’ll have to note that we’re only mentioning a handful of events in this article while trying to cover the calendar year from this time last year.

Kicking things off in September with Free Fire Indonesia Masters 2020 Fall, this is where things start getting interesting.
As an example of a regional tournament, we all know that Indonesia is one of the top regions for PUBG Mobile. However, as we can see here, the region also shows a lot of love and enthusiasm for competitive Free Fire too.
With a respectable viewership for this type of event, let’s keep it rolling to bigger things.

Sitting as one of the top 5 viewed events ever for competitive Free Fire, the Continental Series 2021 Asia was an incredible event.
Indeed, with a mind-boggling peak viewership of 2,566,046, the event slightly edged out the Americas region which was taking place at the same time.
Although huge, you’ll be happy to know there’ll be a bigger event this year.
Free Fire Latinoamerica 2021 Opening – January/March 2021
$114,750
Online
Peak Viewers – 1,460,906
Average Viewers – 98,509
When we take preferred regions, when discussing Free Fire, the Latin America region is a massive favourite – constantly offering some of the best viewership.
Indeed, that was no different at the LA 2021 Opening where we enjoyed some impressive viewership and competition too.
Free Fire Tri Series 2021 – April 2021
$50,000
Online
Peak Viewers – 150,922
Average Viewers – 38,441
Moving over to a lesser region, here, Garena decided to combine three different regions into one Tri Series combined.
Nothing too crazy here, though it’s always great to see Garena experimenting with how they host events.
Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore – May 2021
$2,000,000
Offline
Peak Viewers – 5,414,953
Average Viewers – 2,087,307
And now, we’ve reached the peak of the competitive season.
Acting as one of the best events in the year, the Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore is officially the most viewed esports event in the history of competitive Free Fire.
Held offline with a $2,000,000 prize pool, it acted as one of the few offline events ever held this season.
Also, the competition was simply awesome and we can’t wait for more events like this. It’s an event like this which cement this esport as a top contender.
Liga Brasileira de Free Fire 2021 Series A Stage 2 – June 2021

Online
Peak Viewers – 598,885
Average Viewers – 168,138

With almost 600,000 peak viewers, this was an awesome event to help conclude the season.
Competitive Free Fire 2020/21 – What’s Next?
So, in conclusion, it’s safe to say that Free Fire is hot on the heels of PUBG Mobile.
I think, the only thing Free Fire needs to work on to keep up to PUBG Mobile is hosting more regular premier/major events with larger prize pools. Otherwise, we can commend the esport for having an awesome season, especially with the Singapore World Series.
With the current health situation in the world, hosting live esports events is becoming somewhat difficult due to unpredictability. Accordingly, we’ve got some bad news. Indeed, the Free Fire World Series 2021 is now officially cancelled. Read on for more news.
Free Fire World Series 2021 – Very Unfortunate
Overall, this is quite disheartening news – especially since the World Series looked to be one of the best competitive Free Fire events ever.
For further detail, Garena shared the following statement with Dotesports:
The World Series stands as Free Fire’s largest and most exciting esports offline tournament.
The growing safety concerns, however, have made it challenging to provide players and fans both an enjoyable yet safe offline esports experience.

Supposedly, this November event was apparantly planned to be held in Mexico such as the previous Six Major.
However, the country is doing too well with regards to the health situation and the event has unfortunately had to be called off.
Yet, Garena has not offered up reason as to why the event can’t be held online. Instead of losing the entire event, an online one could have perhaps offered some exciting competition anyway.
Regardless, we’ll keep our hopes up. Otherwise, there are still a bunch of events to watch. We’ll be sure to stay up to date.
A few weeks ago, the folks over at esports organization TSM announced a roster for competitive Free Fire. Now, some time later, the organization is once again investing in the esport, this time TSM Sign Free Fire roster all the way from Brazil. Read on as we cover this story.
TSM Sign Free Fire Roster – Dancing Between Regions
It’s quite simple really. Usually, organizations sign two teams for an esport for two main reasons:
Either to house a main and academy roster
Or to house multiple rosters across multiple regions
In this situation, TSM is signing a Brazilian roster in order to penetrate the region. Once again they’re signing a former roster – that of Black Dragons Esports. Such a team consists of the following players:
Rafael “Nappon” Soares
Guilherme Brock “BROCO” Barbosa
Victor Vinicius “VINNIXL” Ferreira Varela
Marcelo “BOB7″ Luiz
Although not the most star-studded team in Brazil, they have some strong achievements so far, including a second place at the recent LBFF Series B Stage 2.
Compared to the Indian roster, the Brazilian one is clearly an investment for the future with this region lagging slightly behind India.
Anyways, it’s clear that TSM is aware of the incredible potential in Free Fire; looking to capitalize on the opportunity early.
Following the Spring version of the event, many patiently waited for an announcement for the Fall. Indeed, we’re referring to the Free Fire India Championship Fall 2021 event. Only recently, Garena released some more details behind the event! Read on to learn more!

Overall, a total of 18 teams will start the competition, moving down to 12 in the Grand Finals which will conclude on October 17th.
We can’t wait to learn more about the event in the coming weeks.

Since this is the very first iteration of this exciting event, it’s quite difficult to throw out some predictions. Regardless, let’s dig in to see what we can use as a reference by glancing at the performances at the City Play-Ins.
Delhi Titans – a strong team indeed, dominating their Play-In with a 31 point lead on second place. Bearing this in mind, they look to be strong contenders at the National Finals.
Hyderabad Nawabs – with regards to the Nawabs, they were probably the most shockingly powerful team in the Play-Ins. Indeed, by scoring 146 points with their closest competitor at 64 truly raises the expectations.
Lucknow Warriors – probably placed in one of the toughest Play-In groups with teams such as Survivor 4AM, they managed to pull out a tough victory. Such a test will prove helpful at the main event.
Although those are three notable teams, everybody has a chance to go far.
Here at esportsguide, we’ve been vocal about the fact that mobile esports is on the rise. Accordingly, we’re constantly questioning which are the top 5 mobile esports out there. Bearing this in mind, feel free to read on to learn our take on this exciting topic!
Before proceeding, let’s discuss the protocol for the ranking. Similar to our Esports Tier Lists, the ‘level/rating’ of an esport is multifactorial. For example, here are some criteria which will help us list the mobile esports today:
Event Proportions – Size of prize pools, number of participants, third and first party organizers, environment and arena capacities Event frequency – is the year bursting with competition or solely reliant on infrequent first-party organizers Competitiveness – the level of competition in an esports scene is related to its livelihood State of the community – health of the lower tier sectors and general condition of the esport as a dynamic entity
With that being said, do note that regardless of the numbers, this is ultimately an opinionated list.
Let’s dive into Number 5!
#5 – Clash Royale
A couple years ago, the mobile game developer of SuperCell literally owned all of mobile gaming. One fruit of this was one of the very first mobile esports in the form of Clash Royale.
Accordingly, let’s take a look at the recent viewership statistics for this strategy game. Note that all viewership details are taken from Esports Charts. Let’s see how the yearly Clash Royale League World Finals has done:
2018 – 361,849 Peak Viewers
2019 – 133,046 Peak Viewers
2020 – 112,578 Peak Viewers
Although slowing down since 2020, the title is still worth placing at fifth on our list.
At this fifth spot we also considered a few other contenders such as CoD Mobile and potentially Wild Rift. However, due to the recent improvements with Brawl Stars, it earned this spot.
#4 – Brawl Stars
Continuing things at number 4 is a mobile esport that we actually do not feature on esportsguide. Indeed, one of the more recent mobile titles from last year – it’s Brawl Stars.
Accordingly, there is an awesome frequency of events in this esport together with some great viewership. Take a look at the viewership statistics for the 2020 iteration of the Brawl Stars World Finals:
Peak Viewers – 258,446
Average Viewers – 134,119
Beyond these great numbers, it’s also simply fun to watch overall. What Brawl Stars needs next is to expand to a global approach.
#3 – Arena of Valor/Kings of Glory – Top 5 Mobile Esports
Entering the ring at third place, we have our very own featured title of Arena of Valor and its Chinese version Kings of Glory. As the only mobile MOBA on the list, the title is incredibly successful at attrcting a tonne of worldwide attention with its massive events.
Here are a few examples of some events together with their viewership figures:
Arena of Valor Premier League 2020 – Peak Viewers 670,768
Arena of Valor International Championship 2020 – Peak Viewers 568,453
2021 Arena of Valor World Cup 2021 – Peak Viewers 550,057
Overall, it’s a very impressive mobile esport due to the size, frequency and gravity of events. In fact, it could easily be in the top 2 were it not for the incredible viewership numbers of the leaders.
#2 – Garena Free Fire
The way competitive Free Fire invaded the esports industry last year was simply mindblowing. Although not being entirely new, last year is when the title starting atracting worldwide attention following some staggering viewership numbers.
Take a look for yourself below:
Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore – 5,414,953 Peak Viewers
Free Fire Continental Series 2020 Asia – 2,556,046 Peak Viewers
2020 Free Fire Continental Series Americas – 1,718.508 Peak Viewers
However, viewership alone doesn’t make an esport. Accordingly, with how relatively young Free Fire is, all it needs to work on now is penetrating the global market better to regions such as North America and Europe.
On the other hand, that’s exactly what our number 1 pick gets right.
#1 – PUBG Mobile – Top 5 Mobile Esports
Yes, we’re certain that some of you guess correctly – PUBG Mobile is our number one mobile esport as of right now. Overall, the esport simply gets everything right.
For one thing, viewership is also awesome, although Free Fire does edge it out slightly:
PMGC Season 0 – 3,801,998 Peak Viewers
PUBG Mobile World League 2020 East – 1,153,865 Peak Viewers
PUBG Mobile Pro League Season 3 2021 SA Finals – 1,117,367 Peak Viewers
Again, what really makes PUBG Mobile stand out is its determination to host regional leagues in an incredible number of countries. For the most part, it’s almost too much to cover!
Together with this incredible number of events all over the world, the major events which follow always hit hard and the competition is great.
