Specifically, one event is left in the competitive circuit for this season. Indeed, the PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2022 is ongoing. With $4,000,000 on the line and the top 50 teams in the world, the event looks to end the season in an epic way.

Usually, the road map for the next season is announced right before the Grand Finals. So, while we wait for the Grand Finals to kick off between January 6th and 8th, let’s discuss some predictions.

PUBG Mobile 2023 Esports – Keeping a Global Approach

One thing we’ve always praised PUBG Mobile for is an uncanny global approach.

Moreover, in the form of a structure called the ‘PUBG Mobile Pro League’ and also ‘Nations Leagues’ climaxing in Regional Championships. Let’s list all the regions below:

  • Europe
  • Americas
  • Middle-East and Africa
  • South Asia
  • Southeast Asia
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Brazil
  • LATAM

  • North America
  • Turkey
  • Africa
  • Arabia
  • Pakistan
  • Vietnam
  • Thailand
  • Indonesia
  • China

Accordingly, we’re curious to see if anything changes with regards to regional formats.

International Events – Room for More

This past year, Tencent have done a great job at hosting a few international events as listed:

  • PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2022 – $4,000,000
  • PUBG Mobile World Invitational – $2,000,000

However, Tencent are instead putting more effort into regional events rather than international ones. We’re curious to see whether more frequent international events will take place in the 2023 esports road map.

In addition, viewership needs to improve in a sense that make the esports numbers comparable to the 2021 numbers – when 3,801,998 peak viewers were recorded for the PUBG Global Championship Season 0.

Esports Tier List 2022 Q4 – A Conclusive Look at the Year

As is tradition at esportsguide, we love working on an Esports Tier List every now and then. Indeed, following the conclusion of some of the largest esports events ever, now is the best time ever. Accordingly, feel free to read on for an updated list for Esports Tier List 2022 Q4!

Indeed, as always, we’ll fill you in on the same criteria we’ve always used to dictate our tier lists:

  • Event Proportions – Size of prize pools, number of participants, third and first party organizers, environment and arena capacities
  • Event frequency – is the year bursting with competition or solely reliant on infrequent first-party organizers
  • Competitiveness – the level of competition in an esports scene is related to its livelihood
  • State of the community – health of the lower tier sectors and general condition of the esport as a dynamic entity
Credits: Garena

Accordingly, with that taken care of, always remember that these lists are subject to our opinion too. Otherwise, we’ll be listing the top viewership from the time period, although it’s not the only factor considered. We’re not looking at growth – just where they stand.

Tier 1 – Welcoming VALORANT and Free Fire – Esports Tier List 2022

  • LoL – 2022 World Championship – Peak Viewers 5,147,701
  • CS:GO – PGL Major Antwerp 2022 – Peak Viewers 2,113,610
  • Dota 2 – The International 2022 – Peak Viewers 1,751,086
  • VALORANT – VALORANT Champions 2022 – Peak Viewers 1,505,804
  • Free Fire – Free Fire World Series 2022 Sentosa – Peak Viewers 1,477,545
Heroic BLAST

So, let’s talk about the changes involved here. Firstly, since our last Esports Tier List, we’ve decided to promote VALORANT to Tier 1 after an incredible second season, breaking the million peak viewer mark.

In addition, we’ve decided to demote PUBG Mobile from Tier 1 to Tier 2 due to a quieter year, failing to reach the same level of viewership. In contrast, Free Fire managed to grow in the past year and have earned a spot as the top Mobile Esport in the world.

Otherwise, LoL and CS:GO retain their spots as the two very best esports in the world, each having incredible years. Although still worthy of Tier 1, Dota had a rough year and will look to improve next year.

Tier 2 – Multiple Promotions and Demotions

  • PUBG Mobile – 31st Southeast Asian Games PUBG Mobile – Peak Viewers 903,011
  • AoG – Arena of Glory Winter 2022 – Peak Viewers 644,383
  • Rocket League – RLCS 21-22 World Championship – Peak Viewers 368,721
  • Overwatch League – OWL 2022 Playoffs – Peak Viewers 397,868
  • CoD – CDL 2022 Playoffs – Peak Viewers 275,244

While Tier 1 has remained somewhat the same, Tier 2 has seen multiple changes since last year.

Perhaps the most impressive climber is the likes of Rocket League – after an impressive year with constant improvement in viewership, the esport is kicking up very well. They’re climb to Tier 2 from Tier 3 is joined by AoG which has remained consistent over the past two years.

Also, Overwatch has made the jump thanks to a much needed improvement of viewership from last year. In fact, it was doubled this year thanks to the excitement behind Overwatch 2.

As we explained prior, for now we’ve had to demote PUBG Mobile to Tier 2 as they’ve failed to be consistent this past year. Let’s see if things improve next year.

Tier 3 – Halo Infinite Making a Mark

  • Halo World Championship 2022 – Peak Viewers 143,585
  • FIFA – FIFA eWorld Cup 2022 – Peak Viewers 149,465
  • PUBG – PUBG Nations Cup – Peak Viewers 239,112
  • Rainbow Six Siege – Six Invitational 2022 – Peak Viewers 262,714
Overwatch 2

Here in Tier 3, the likes of Halo and FIFA are newcomers. With Halo restarting esports operations this year, it joins an improving FIFA scene which returned with offline events this year.

Meanwhile, we’ve decided to demote PUBG and Rainbow Six Siege as they both seem to be lacking growth. Bearing this in mind, both esports are making big changes for 2023 in search of success.

Tier 4 – Wild Rift Experiment Failing?

Screenshot e
Credits: Blizzard
  • StarCraft II – IEM Katowice 2022 – Peak Viewers 50,635
  • Fortnite – Fortnite Champions Series 2022 Invitational – Peak Viewers 381,915
  • Hearthstone – Hearthstone World Championship – Peak Viewers 21,786
  • Wild Rift – Icons Global Championship 2022 – Peak Viewers – 54,261

Meanwhile, here in Tier 4 we have the likes of StarCraft II, Fortnite and Wild Rift all in need of some improvement.

In conclusion, we can confidently say that Hearthstone is in a dire spot.

Mobile Battle Royale Esports – Comparing Free Fire and PUBG Mobile

Over the past few years, there’s been an ongoing discussion over mobile esports. Specifically, mobile battle royale esports has always involved competition between Free Fire and PUBG Mobile. While PUBG Mobile has always sat on top, Free Fire seems to be closing the gap!

Battle Royale Esports On the Move

With regards to the mobile esports industry, both these games are rather young. Accordingly, with Free Fire released in December 2017, PUBG Mobile was released later in March 2018.

Anyways, since both fall in the genre of battle royale, here are some core elements of a mobile battle royale that both share:

  • Mobile platform – played on a mobile device over an internet connection
  • Played individually or in teams or 2-4 players each
  • Games consist of a large number of players such as 100
  • Goal of each match is to be the last player or team standing by eliminating all other opponents
  • Arena shrinks with time as the time progresses until the match ends

However, there are certainly differences between the titles, find a few listed below:

  • Maps; Free Fire only consists of few maps while PUBG Mobile consists of multiple
  • Gameplay: PUBG Mobile offers more weapons, more realistic graphics and details and vehicles
  • Overall, the main difference is the design and gameplay – FF is arcade and fast-paced, designed with low performance in mind while PUBG Mobile is more realistic and slow-paced

Indeed, following the discussion on gameplay, let’s look at esports.

Mobile Battle Royale Esports – Different Tiers

One thing we’ve always loved about mobile esports is how inclusive the scenes tend to be. Specifically, by being mobile, anyone can compete from anywhere with cheap setups.

Moreover, PUBG Mobile set the standard with an incredible global approach – one which Free Fire has taken note of.

So, while PUBG Mobile has definitely had a headstart with regards to the esport, now in 2022 both are very similar in structure.

In particular, both esports involve two international majors every year and seeding involves teams competing through many regional events hosted throughout the year. Anyways, here’s how both look below:

Free Fire

  • World Series November 2022 – $2,000,000
  • World Series 2022 Sentosa – $2,000,000
  • Regions: Pakistan, Vietnam, Brazil, MENA, Thailand, Latin America, Indonesia, North America, India, Brazil, Europe, Malaysia, Taiwan

PUBG Mobile

  • PUBG Mobile Global Championship 2022 – $4,000,000
  • World Invitational 2022 – $2,000,000
  • Regions: China, South Korea, Japan, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, South Asia, Pakistan, Arabia, Africa, North America, Latin America, Brazil, Turkey, West Europe

On closer examination, the PUBG Mobile regional events tend to have larger prize pools. Also, the international events for PUBG Mobile feature more teams and bigger scale overall. Yet, Free Fire is definitely on the right track.

Esport Viewership – Ridiculous Numbers

Beyond competition, we need to look at esports viewership in order to understand popularity within the esport. Let’s take a look at the top 3 viewership numbers for each title:

Free Fire

  • Free Fire World Series 2021 Singapore – 5,415,990 Peak Viewers
  • FFContinental Series 2020 Asia – 2,566,046 Peak Viewers
  • FF World Series 2019 Rio – 2,016,157 Peak Viewers

PUBG Mobile

  • PUBG Mobile Global Championship Season 0 – 3,801,998 Peak Viewers
  • World League 2020 East – 1,153,865 Peak Viewers
  • PMPL Season 3 2021 Southeast Asia Finals – 1,117,367 Peak Viewers

As you can see above, Free Fire certainly managed to stun the industry with a peak of over 5,000,000 viewers. Naturally, a 4,000,000 peak viewers for PUBG Mobile is also hugely impressive.

Although not entirely beloved in the Western world, both these esports are catering to an unhinged community of viewers – setting the new ceiling for esports industry.

Indeed, it’s very difficult to say which esports is ‘better’ overall. However, there are certainly differences.

In summary, Free Fire has better viewership. However, PUBG Mobile hosts more events in more regions with larger international events.

Regardless, Free Fire has grown more in a shorter time – we can’t wait to see how both compare in a few years down the line.

Do note that this event is only a buildup to another segment – the top 5 teams heading to the AfterParty Showdown where another $1,000,000 will be on the line!

Format

With regards to the format, the event seems to be relevantly simple.

Moreover, the 18 teams will be thrown into one lobby and compete in several rounds of competition. Earning points will involve converting frags and achieving higher placings.

While the point system hasn’t been clarified yet, the event will likely follow the point system which the PUBG Mobile Pro League has put into place for every region:

  • Elimination/Frag – 1 point per elimination
  • Placement – 1st (15 points), 2nd (12 points), 3rd (10 points), 4th (8 points), 5th (6 points), 6th (4 points), 7th (2 points), 8-12th (1 point), 13-18th (0 points)

Again, this is only a common example – the point system could be slightly different in reality once it’s announced.

Predictions

Notably, the last time the international community went at it was back in January of this year at the PUBG Mobile Global Championship Grand Finals 2021. Here’s how the standings stood:

  • #1 – Nova Esports (China)
  • #2 – Natus Vincere (Eastern Europe)
  • #3 – Nigma Galaxy (Middle East)
  • #4 – S2G Esports (Europe)
  • #5 – D’Xavier (Southeast Asia)

So, although Nova Esports didn’t make it this time around, the Chinese region seed remains the favourite. Specifically, Regans Gaming will look to defend the throne for the region of competition.

Otherwise, Nigma Galaxy is one of the few teams returning who placed very well at the PMGC Grand Final 2021 – they’ll look to impress with another chance on the international stage.

Regardless, this event looks to be huge for the esport considering the fact that we’re headed to an offline venue with so much prize on the line!
