Psyonix Promise Change – A Turning Point for Rocket League Esports?

Competitive Rocket League is geared to change entirely following a recent public statement from the develops, Psyonix. Following a serious amount of flak, the Rocket League Championship Series received from over ten professional teams, Psyonix has responded with ideas of reform and restructuring according to the criticism.

To address the seemingly exclusive nature of competition, Psyonix looks to integrate a more ‘open’ platform by following a schedule similar to that of a franchised league such as the LEC. Cutting up the year into three splits per seasonwith three events each, per region, of course, all teams can fight for both cash prize and points in order to cement a placing at the World Championship.

With all this talk of change – what about the RLCS teams competing right now? Supposedly, Psyonix has confirmed that those who qualified for next season will have their spots transferred to the regional tournaments should they keep the same team.

All this seems rather familiar and at the same time, quite promising as Rocket League looks to develop a more structure, first-party and consistent framework enabling the community to earn their way in.

However, many of the details remain unconfirmed. Until then, Psyonix has taken up a position in which they can make the most of feedback, as exemplified by the underlying quote:

We have been communicating actively with RLCS organizations and prominent Rocket League Esports community members to gather their feedback, address concerns, and share information with them as soon as possible.

We have no details to share about the next season of the RLCS yet, but these discussions have been extremely productive and we’re looking forward to revealing more about the future of Rocket League Esports in the coming weeks.

Change won’t come easy, and it surely won’t come overnight either. Rocket League is still in its earliest beginnings and looks to be growing at a steady pace. The recent disbanding of Cloud9’s legendary roster is certainly concerning to the community together with others such as Veloce Esports.
Before the new season begins, Psyonix has confirmed 10 community tournaments this summer to pass the time.

This is potentially a turning point for Rocket League esports, one we’ll keep our eye on.
