Smash World Tour 2020 – What Happened?

Earlier this year, the competitive Super Smash Bros. community warmly received the announcement of the Smash World Tour 2020. Indeed, the structure built by VGBootCamp and Super Smash Con was to tour the world for the highest level of competition ever seen. However, things took a turn for the worse. Here’s another look at the remaining events.

Accordingly, it was planned to kick off on March 13th and running up to December 20th with a prize of $250,000. However, due to the global situation, the following changes were made:

  • All events up to 1st June 2020 cancelled including gold and platinum tiers
  • Platinum events – Pound 2020, Umebura Japan Major 2020, Get on My Level 2020 and others have been cancelled while others have been postponed
  • Gold events – MomoCon 2020, Battle of BC 4 and more cancelled while others postponed.

All in all, it’s been a complete disaster. However, thanks to an update, online competition is now more reliable. Indeed, the Smash World Tour 2020 finally made the transition to online.

Bearing this in mind, the following events have been confirmed for the remainder of the year.

SWT Ultimate 2020

  • Smash Contest: DoKomi 2020 (26th Sep)
  • United LAN 2020 (24th Oct)
  • Invasion: November (14th Nov)
  • CEO 2020 Fighting Game Championships (11th Dec)
  • Bob-omb Battlefield 2020 (19th Dec)

SWT Melee 2020

  • CT Gamercon 4 Game Underground Tournaments (13th March 2021)

State of the Community – Super Smash Bros Unsavable?

The Super Smash Bros competitive community is still recovering. You may ask, “from what?” Poor viewership? A broken game? No, worse, much worse. Ever since July, the community has been riddled with sexual misconduct allegations. Finally, the dust has settled and we can take a closer look through this episode of State of the Community.

Hate the Players, Not the Game

In previous iterations of State of the Community where a community is failing, we’ve often pointed the finger at the developer. However, in the case of Super Smash Bros, Nintendo is not to blame. Actually, ironically enough, a week before the story broke out, a new update contented the community greatly.

So, what exactly happened?

Victims Broke the Silence – Targets Fly

Overall, over 50 victims spoke out on social media. Personalities within the community are burning under the limelight. An incredible thread on Reddit listed every single one of the accusations, and it’s simply shocking. While the entire FGC was under fire, the following is a list exclusive to the Smash Bros community:

  • ‘IGTUnknown’
  • ‘Jtails’
  • ‘Keitaro’
  • ‘LSDX’
  • ‘Mane’
  • ‘Nairo’
  • ‘PBnJ’
  • ‘RelaxAlax’
  • ‘Sherwood’
  • ‘Sky Williams’
  • ‘ZeRo’

All-in-all, it’s simply horrific to see the endless list of accusations and confessions to all of the acts. The list almost reaches a tally of 100. Although it’s easy to understand that this is ‘bad’ – let’s look ahead to see how this could affect the entire competitive scene.

For the most part, we don’t have to look far.

EVO 2020 Cancelled – Players Retire

Indeed, EVO is the largest event for the FGC each year. Packing all communities together under one roof for the largest prize pools, it’s a staple event. For 2020, EVO made the transition to online and was scheduled for 4th July. However, the entire event was cancelled after Joey ‘Mr. Wizard’ Cuellar was accused of sexual misconduct.

The community was shocked and all game developers withdrew. Pro players screamed for action. Just like that, the largest event of the year was cancelled.

Compiled with the situation in the Super Smash Bros community, Nintendo themselves spoke out:

“We are deeply disturbed by the allegations raised against certain members of the competitive gaming community. They are absolutely impermissible.
We want to make it clear that we condemn all acts of violence, harassment, and exploitation against anyone and that we stand with the victims.”

Accordingly, Nintendo is swiftly banning most of the players involved.

Targetting the Source

Figuratively, the community just found a nest of hornets right in the cake. The question to ask here is this – how long has this been taking place? What is the cause of it all?

To clarify, Jacqueline “Jisu” Choe sat down with Kotaku and offered the following answer. What’s more, is that he herself is a proclaimed victim:

“I can’t speak for every other community, but I know in Smash, there was never a voice to speak up and air out the truth.

While the world at large has finally reached its boiling point and sparked change through movements like #MeToo, the insularity of Smash culture has made it hard for anyone to talk about anything outside of the game.

These types of behaviours have been happening for years, and when sporadically brought up, were quickly swept aside because it upsets the people. Even worse are people calling it an attempt to ‘clout-chase’ or ‘stir drama’ because the viewer is incapable of seeing how these players they idolize could be horrible people.”

Altogether, it’s a mindset stuck to a certain generation. Hence, by eliminating this wave of players, a way for the future may be paved.

The Future of Super Smash Bros?

Right now it doesn’t look too swell for the community. Besides the cancellation of EVO 2020, further consequences are expected to reflect on the community.

In addition, third-party event organizers might begin refusing to host tournaments for the title. In all fairness, would you want to be associated as a co-ordinator? Apart from that, such an awful occurrence has stained the community deeply: new players may be discouraged to join the scene entirely.

The paradox lies in this solution. Yes, Nintendo needs to beef up security at their events, but in the end, a new wave of fresh players needs to be introduced into the scene. Honestly, that’s the only way a problem like this may be solved.

Particularly, this could have happened to any esports scene – it’s essential that the industry learns from this. Certainly, demonising players won’t achieve much for the scene, new players must take their place and reinvent the scene.

EVO Online Cancelled Due to Sexual Allegations!

We’ll start this article by tackling a serious topic. The competitive fighting game community has simply imploded following a series of accusations regarding sexual misconduct ranging from players to organizers. As a product of all of this, EVO Online has been officially cancelled after each title withdrew from the competition.

This is a massive blow to the community – in the following list, find the list of all of the accusations for context:

  • EVO President and Co-Founder Joey ‘MrWizard’ Cuellar accused of being a predator towards minors, and sexual misconduct – has since been fired
  • Super Smash Bros. (SSB) player Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada accused of statutory rape
  • SSB player Richard “Keitaro” King accused of statutory rape – has apologized since
  • SSB player Cinnamon “Cinnpie” Dunson accused of statutory rape
  • SSB player D’Ron “D1” Maingrette accused of rape

It’s honestly quite shocking. The irony is, that after EVO 2019 last year, the community had a similar influx of sexual allegations across all titles. It’s all a domino effect – once one person has the determination to accuse, this enables others to do so too.

Top competitors such as SonicFox and Sajam have taken stances in supporting the decision to cancel EVO Online and have called for further action. Resolutions should appear within the next few weeks, while the accused have either apologized or remained silent for now.

It’s a tough time for the fighting game community right now. No information has revealed whether EVO Online will be held at a later date or not.

Cloud9 Valorant Signing, Blizzard Overhaul Contenders and Super Smash Bros. Melee Update!

Starting with VALORANT, the release of competitive has been a bit unsteady, due to the delayed launch and certain pros leaving – the announcement of Cloud9 filling out their roster slowly is great news though. Having such a large organization backing up the new esport at its start is what Riot Games needs to propel the scene forward.

Following the first addition of ‘TenZ’ to the roster, the former CounterStrike: Global Offensive professional of “Relyks” seems like a promising second addition to the roster after it was founded earlier this year. “Relyks” isn’t that well-known as a professional which is all the more promising – since he hasn’t had his big break yet, it’s more likely that he’ll be hungry for success in VALORANT

“Relyks” joins the roster and seems to fit in well – hopefully other organizations will begin picking up players and not let Cloud9 capture all the aces they need in their deck.

Super Smash Bros. Melee – Rollback Netcode is Gamechanging

Meanwhile, although VALORANT may be huge right now, the community for Super Smash Bros is absolutely ecstatic. Responding to the fact that the Nintendo title had to be omitted from EVO 2020 Online due to a notoriously poor online connection, Nintendo has just reworked the entire system and it’s changed the game entirely.

Namely, the personality of ‘Fizzi’ on Twitter revealed the following changes following months of work to the netcode for Super Smash Bros. Melee:

  • Rollback netcode
  • Integrated matchmaking
  • Auto-updates
  • Replays

The rollback net-code is a game changer for Melee as online is now smoother as commands are conserved and predicted despite input lag. Now, it’s no longer impossible to match up with international players, who prior to the update may have been from Mars.
Speaking of which, an official matchmaking mode will now allow players to find a game way easier – as before one needed a specific code to join a lobby and it was all quite a nuisance. In a time of online competition and separation, this update couldn’t be better timed and is absolutely huge for the Super Smash Bros. Melee community.

Blizzard Overhauling Contenders – Season 2 Changes

Over in Overwatch, Blizzard is conjuring up their own little changes for the betterment of the community. In order to introduce a higher level of competition, the following changes have been outlined by Blizzard as officially set for the next season:

  • Improved viewership experience for Contenders China
  • South America Season two will offer both a regular season and a final single-eliminatino tournament
  • North America and Europe have moved to monthly tournaments over a regular season

  • South Korea and Australia will continue like previous seasons through regular seasons
  • The Pacific region no longer exists – it has been removed from Contenders

These are definitely strong changes, and hopefully, Overwatch Contenders will begin to grow as planned and recuperate from the losses.

EVO Online Announced – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Dropped

The Evolution Championship Series, or EVO, is the most iconic fighting game event of every year, where the best in the world battle it out across multiple titles to figure out who truly is the best fighter in the whole world. Unfortunately, due to the situation of the world, the entire event has transitioned to an online format with different dates: what’s more concerning is the fate of Super Smash Bros which will no longer be at the event.

The competitive fighting genre in esports is one of the most intense scenes due to its dependency on frame data and precise timing. Due to this, going online would require an impeccable net code. The newly formed five-week event of EVO Online, with a heavy heart, was forced to drop Super Smash Bro due to its notoriously unreliable network. The other games hosted have their own situations: either using delay-based or rollback netcode solutions.

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus
  • Samurai Showdown
  • Soulcalibur 6
  • Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition
  • Tekken 7
  • Under Night In-Birth
  • Killer Instinct
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath
  • Skullgirls 2nd Encore
  • Them’s Fightin’ Hers

Running from 4th July to the 2nd August, the Smash community is rather saddened by the announcement though completely understanding. Everybody understands that quality competition would not have been possible and this is where everyone looks to Nintendo to fix this.
