For the first time ever, the organization will not have an appearance in the 2020 World Championship after losing a best of 5 in the Summer playoffs versus TSM. Cloud9 not qualifying for Worlds is extremely shocking as this could be considered as the biggest throw in esports history.
Cloud9 missing Worlds – What happened?
In the Spring Split, Cloud9 had shown absolute dominance all throughout the split. Ending the Spring season in 1st place, after topping everyone in the group stage with 17 wins and 1 loss, and then advancing forward to eventually win out in the playoffs. Despite their amazing Spring Split, we are seeing a highly degraded version of the Cloud9 we saw earlier this year.
Cloud9 had an excellent start to their Summer Split. At Week 4 they remained undefeated, however by Week 8, Team Liquid took 1st place spot after losing 5 games. The Semifinals were still confirmed for Cloud9 however they quickly dropped down to the loser bracket after losing 3-1 to Flyquest. They were then matched up versus Evil Geniuses, which they beat quite easily, and progressed forward to face off TSM.
Game 1
Cloud9 had a terrible start to their first game, as they were losing a lot of early duels, which resulted in their first loss.
Game 2
In Game 2, Cloud9 showed a much better performance as they focused down on the main objectives to secure the victory.
Game 3
In their 3rd match, both Cloud9 and TSM were pretty even, however a huge teamfight win for TSM in the Jungle secured them a match point.
Game 4
The Final match of the series was yet again, another dominant performance by TSM as they took down Cloud9 bit by bit, and eventually taking down their nexus to grab their Worlds 2020 spot.
Cloud9 missing Worlds was extremely disappointing, not only for the fans, but for the players and staff of Cloud9 as well. This is what Cloud9’s top laner, Licorice had to say after their defeat:
What’s next for the LCS?
The North American Summer Split is not over. With this win, TSM are going to face off Team Liquid at the end of the week with hopes to reach the Grand Finals and go up against Flyquest.
