Accordingly, the competitive SCII community is back for another season after IEM Katowice 2022. After crowning a World Champion, we’re ready to start once again. Read on as we provide all of the viewership details you need for the 2022 Global StarCraft II League Season 1: Code S!
Event Background
Organized by AfreecaTV and ESL, the GSL events have become a staple to competitive Starcraft II. Indeed, with ‘Code S’ being the highest level of competition, it’s an opportunity for the best players in the world to compete.
Taking place offline in South Korea, Seoul, a prize pool of $123,000 is up for grabs. Running from 21st March to 5th May, the 20 top players in the world are here to compete.

Acting as the first chapter of gameplay for the 2022/23 season, read on as we dive deeper into the context of this exciting event.
Format
There are several stages of competition to bear in mind, spanning a few months.
To begin with, we have the Group Stage 1. Here, we’ll be enjoying a Dual Tournament Format. With 5 groups of 4 seeded, only two players from each group will advance to the next stage. Find the Groups listed below:
- A: Dark, Classic, DRG, Dream
- B: Zest, Ryung, Armani, Maru
- C: Rogue, NightMare, ByuN, Zoun
- D: Trap, GuMiho, Creator, Solar
- E: Cure, herO, RagnaroK, Bunny
Following this first group stage, we have Group Stage. Here, a Round Robin will take place with BO3 matches. With only two groups here, only the top 3 will progress from each group. Specifically, first place earns a Playoffs Semifinals seed, while second and third place move on to the Round of 6.
And then, we have our bracket .Starting with the Round of 6, a handful of matches will take place to eliminate two further players. Here, matches will be BO3.
Finally, we’ll have our Playoffs. Now we’ll have a single-elimination bracket. The semi-finals matches are BO5 and the finals are BO7.
Apart from prize, teams making it to the semifinals will also earn a spot at the 2022 GSL Season 2 event later on this year.
