The Call of Duty League this year is proving to be the most competitive the scene has ever been. Indeed, it’s this simple idea which is on everyone’s mind heading into the CDL Stage 2 Major 2021. Yes, there are top dogs and underdogs, but everyone has a fair chance at the $500,000 should they show up and play their game. Read on for an episode of How to Watch for this week’s event!
Event Background
This Stage 2 event is specifically the second stage of the second season of the Call of Duty League. The past three weeks of competition have built up to this event – all teams have earned their seeds into the double elimination bracket. Here’s a reminder of the 12 franchises competing at the event:
- Atlanta FaZe
- New York Subliners
- Toronto Ultra
- London Royal Ravens
- LA Guerrillas
- LA Thieves
- Minnesota Rokkr
- OpTic Chicago
- Dallas Empire
- Seattle Surge
- Paris Legion
- Florida Mutineers
Since the last stage, multiple roster changes and in-game meta changes have properly shaped up and deepened the level of competition in the league. Note that teams aren’t just competing for money, but also for further CDL points to help their claim to further events.
Format
As I’ll reiterate, the event will enjoy a classic double elimination bracket format. For those unaware, this means that teams in the Losers’ bracket can only suffer one loss before dropping out of the event. Meanwhile, a loss in the Winners’ bracket will result in falling to the Losers’ Bracket – a format which encourages competitive opportunities.

Predictions for the CDL Stage 2 Major 2021
In terms of predictions and expectations, they’ve certainly shaped up since Stage 1. Accordingly, I’ll provide a short list of the top 5 together with some commentary to show off where everyone sits:
- Atlanta FaZe – properly undefeated for the majority of Stage 2, these red giants took care of business in Group A with all four players within the top 10 K/Ds of the stage so far. Taking them down will be very difficult as they hunger for another stage win.
- Minnesota Rokkr – a pleasant surprise from Stage 1, the signing of “Standy” has flipped this team on its head, taking down their Group in a shocking manner. Do they have what it takes to face off against FaZe?
- Dallas Empire – although having just lost in their last match-up, the Empire have consistently played well and seem more reliable than the opposition of OpTic Chicago for example.
- OpTic Chicago – at one point they suffered an 0-6 scoreline in maps although they bounced back against Dallas. Yes, when they’re on point they are an incredible team, but will they show up at the event?
- New York Subliners – putting them here is a little tough for me as the competition is just so tight as the team can hang with the best of the best
Furthermore, the likes of Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles Guerillas and Florida are some of the more competitive teams. Meanwhile, London, Paris and Thieves have some serious work to do.
