Event Background
Forming part of the ESL Challenger series of events, these events are ESL’s way of celebrating the tier A competition for CS:GO.
Hosting multiple international events each year, ESL Challenger DreamHack Melbourne is simply the next stop for the scene. Taking place from the 2nd to the 4th September, a total of $100,000 is on the line.
With teams competing offline at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, the following 8 will be competing as per qualification:

Apart from the prize pool, teams will be competing for a single seed to the ESL Pro League Conference Season 17. Let’s see what format they’ll have to fight through!
Format
With regards to the format, there are two stages of competition. Firstly, the eight teams will fight through a group stage. Here, the following groups have been randomly decided:
- A: OG, Entropiq, Evil Geniuses, Wings Up Gaming
- B: Imperial Esports, paiN Gaming, ORDER, VERTEX ESC
Specifically, each group will compete through a GSL format, or double elimination format. For those unaware, this means that teams need to win two games in order to progress.
Bearing this in mind, Opening and Winners’ matches are BO1 while Elimination and Decider matches are BO3.
From this stage, only the top 2 teams from each group will progress to the Playoffs.
Once in the playoffs, the final four will compete in a single elimination bracket with BO3 matches. After two days of competition, a winner will be decided in the Grand Final on 4th September.

Predictions
Naturally, heading into this event, the teams seeding through the ESL World Ranking are certainly favoured. Let’s take a look to see exactly where they sit in this international ranking system:
- #1 – OG – #16
- #2 – Imperial – #18
- #3 – paiN Gaming – #23
- #4 – ORDER – #41
Considering these rankings, it seems that OG, Imperial and paiN Gaming are a step above.
Otherwise, the qualifier teams can also make some noise, especially the likes of Entropiq and Evil Geniuses who ranks in the early 30s of the ESL World Ranking.
In addition, VERTEX ESC and Wings Up Gaming could very well surprise the competition – likely through an early upset in the BO1 matches.
Throughout we’ll be keeping an eye to see who’ll make it to the ESL Pro League Conference – note that paiN Gaming has already qualified for this event.
