Heading into 2022, we’re hoping that competitive Hearthstone steps things up. Accordingly, after a rough 2021, new formats are here. Speaking of which, we can’t wait to discuss the first upcoming event – Masters Tour 2022 Onyxia’s Lair. Read on for all the viewership details for this hallmark event to kickoff the year!
Event Background
Organized by Blizzard Entertainment, the Masters Tour is back. Indeed, under the theme of ‘Onyxia’s Lair’ the open-format tournament looks to celebrate a competition between over 400 players from all over the globe.
Fighting for the staple $250,000 prize pool, players are playing the newly updated version in the hopes to rise to the top of this online event. For those unaware, Masters Tour is the second tier of competition for Hearthstone, focusing on open competition compared to the Grandmaster events for example.
Running this weekend, from 17th to 20th February, we usually like to list our competitors for events, but considering the vast size of this event, we’ll avoid doing so!
Also, there is likely a seed for Masters Summer Championship 2022 on the line for first place.
Format
In terms of format, Blizzard once again is going to manage to single out a winner from 400 playersa in a matter of 3 days. Here is how the competition will be split:
- First Day: Swiss Rounds 1-4
- Second Day: Swiss Rounds 5-8
- Third Day: Round of 16, Top 8, Semifinals and Finals
As you can see above, first we’ll be going through a Swiss Round to cut down the numbers quickly. Then, on the final day, a bracket will determine the best of the best. Specifically, this will be a single-elimination playoff – one chance to progress or become eliminated.
In terms of matches, the format involves a 4-deck, best-of-5 Conquest with a ban for all games.
Schedule for Masters Tour 2022 Onyxia’s Lair
In terms of schedule, we’re looking at a loose schedule with competitive days starting at the same time each day. Specifically, each broadcast starts at the following time:
- 3:00 p.m. PST / 11:00 p.m. GMT / 8:00 a.m. KST

Predictions
Considering that the list of competitors is yet to be made official, let’s do something else. Accordingly, time to look back at the past year of Masters Tour to list the top 3 from each event.
- Undercity (November) – XiaoT, DragonMan, Tianming
- Stormwind (October) – Furyhunter, badajimpom, Dizdemon
- Silvermoon (August) – jiuquanyu, AyRoK, Judgement
- Dalaran (June) – ShuiMoo, OmegaZero, reqvam
So, if any of these names pop up, we’d like to consider them as favourites. Apart from these competitors, there is also the likelihood of GrandMasters showing up to the event also.
Beyond competition, we’re anticipating improved viewership numbers for this year, and this event will be essential to test the waters. Accordingly, released 8 years ago, can Hearthstone esports still impress us? We’ll have to wait and see.
