A final event, with the largest prize pool, greates stakes and prestigious achievement, is an esports calendar’s essential. Accordingly, Riot Games is has once again cooked up such an event for VALORANT – VALORANT Champions 2022. Read on to learn more about this event below!
Event Background
As we’ll reiterate, this is the highlight of the year for competitive VALORANT. Indeed, after multiple regional leagues, two international Majors, Riot Games is inviting the top 16 teams in the world to fight for it all.
Taking place offline in Istanbul, the Playoffs in particular will take place in the Volkswagen Arena with a live crowd which has confirmed to be fully booked already.
Running from 31st August to 18th September, this event looks to continue the tradition set from last year’s season where teams are paid 50% of net proceeds from an in-game Battle Pass.
Anyways, here are the teams competing listed below:
- OpTic Gaming
- XSET
- FunPlus Phoenix
- Fnatic
- LOUD
- Leviatan
- DRX
- ZETA DIVISION
- Paper Rex
- XERXIA
- 100 Thieves
- Team Liquid
- KRU Esports
- FURIA Esports
- EDward Gaming
- BOOM Esports
Some familiar names with some new ones. Read on to learn how exactly teams can surprise in this particular format.
Format
With regards to format, everything remains untouched from last year.
Firstly, following a random process of selection while ensuring no regional clashes, 4 groups of 4 were determined. Here they are below:
- A: Paper Rex, EDward Gaming, Leviatan, Team Liquid
- B: OpTic Gaming, BOOM Esports, ZETA DIVISION, LOUD
- C: FunPlus Phoenix, KRU Esports, XSET, XERXIA
- D: DRX, FURIA Esports, Fnatic, 100 Thieves
Within these groups, teams will fight through a double elimination format. For those unaware, this format involves teams needing to win twice to proceed and are eliminated should they lose twice.
Those who lose their opening match will fight through an elimination match – the winner of which will compete against the loser of the Winners’ match to decide the second seed.
Speaking of which, only the top 2 teams from each group will advance to the Playoffs. Also, all matches will played out in a BO3 layout.
Concerning Playoffs, the 8 remaining teams will be seeded into a double elimination bracket. With BO3 matches, except for the Lower Bracket Final and Grand Final, the principle is simple.
Specifically, all teams in the Playoffs will start in the Upper Bracket – losing here sends a team to the Lower Bracket.. An additional loss eliminates the team from the competition.
