How did they do it?
To start it all off, JD Gaming had an outstanding season, placing 2nd with a 12-4 score line. Above them was Invictus Gaming, the Spring Split 2019 champions, and below them were the reigning world champions, FunPlus Phoenix. After the group stage they headed off to playoffs which led them into Semi-Finals directly since they were the 2nd best team in the LPL. There they faced off against FunPlus Phoenix, which they managed to sweep 3-0. JD Gaming advanced to the finals where they would meet Top Esports in the Grand Finals.
The Grand Finals was very close, having JD Gaming winning the 1st game, and then losing 2 games in a row to Top Esports. Most had predicted that this would be an easy sweep by Top Esports, however JD Gaming weren’t going down without a fight. This culminated in a lot of chaotic and intense teamfights which resulted in JD Gaming winning it all. Here below is a highlight clip from JD gaming in their Grand Finals series:
Watch TES vs. JDG – GRAND FINAL | LPL Spring (2020) from LPL on www.twitch.tvThis year’s LPL Spring split has shown us that a lot of chinese teams are improving. The previous Summer Split was won by FunPlus Phoenix, and the Spring Split was won by Invictus gaming. In comparison to the other regional leagues, China has by far the most competitive league. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing JD Gaming in the Mid-Season invitational this year, as it has been announced by Riot Games that they will be cancelling it this year due to the current health situation. However there have been some adjustments to the World Championship which allow 4 teams to qualify from the LPL to participate. This will not only increase the competition in this year’s Worlds but it will also increase the amount of teams that represent the top regions.
This year’s LPL Spring split was definitely a sight to behold as China keeps on producing legendary teams to display top tier league of legends. However, these legendary teams are expected to keep up their performance, will JD Gaming continue to conquer? Or will they fall off to a former champion? There are no dates confirmed yet of when the Summer Split will kick-off but it is the next event for all top Chinese teams.
