LEC 2020 Playoffs Recap – Fnatic Lose to G2 Esports Yet Again

News

Running from the 3rd to the 19th of April, following a lengthy Spring Season, the LEC 2020 Spring Playoffs recap would put the top six teams from the aforementioned season against one another to sort out the champion of European League of Legends.

Apart from the pride, a prize pool of €200,000 sat on the line, together with qualification into the 2020 Mid-Season Invitational Main Event and 90 Championship Points for a first-place finish. The following six teams were invited to the event:

  • G2 Esports (1)
  • Fnatic (2)
  • Origen (3)
  • MAD Lions (4)
  • Misfits Gaming (5)
  • Rogue (6)

Organized by Riot Games, a double-elimination bracket would take place thanks to the pre-determined seeds as outlined in brackets adjacent to the listed team.

The favourites heading into the event were clearly G2 Esports and Fnatic, with G2 having gone on an 8 win streak to build up a 15-3 scoreline, trailed by Fnatic at 13-5. We’ll be keeping a close look at the two and their expected journey to reach the Finals.

G2 Esports

Matched up with MAD Lions in round one, the favourites looked to be upset immediately from the start as the community was shocked with a 3-2 display from MAD Lions in an exciting series all-round. Being sent down to Round 3 of the Loser’s Bracket meant that G2 Esports would have to fight their way through.

Despite the disappointment early on, G2 Esports was hardly down and out – they’d match up against Origen and take it to them in a 3-1 match. Following this was a thrilling rematch between MAD Lions and G2 – this time, G2 was ready and showed why they were the favourites to land their spot in the finals.

Fnatic

A more simple path took Fnatic all the way: with a 3-1 win against Origen and a 3-0 sweep over MAD Lions.

Finals

Played on the 10.6 patch, a confident Fnatic would take on an apparently vulnerable G2 Esports. A tight series was anticipated, though it would end up to be a dominant affair. Individually and as a team, G2 Esports undeniably overwhelmed Fnatic in order to claim their seventh LEC title to further solid themselves as the top threat in the LEC.

Fnatic did look confident at the beginning of map one, but once G2 Esports fell into a rhythm it was all over, lead by an MVP performance from “mikyx” in the support role.

The historic rivalry between G2 Esports and Fnatic once again goes in the favour of G2 Esports. Certainly demoralising for Fnatic, perhaps they’ll pick things up once the LEC returns on May 22nd.
