With the Overwatch League set to return on May 6th, details are still coming through. Accordingly, a recent report highlights an Overwatch Contenders Update 2022 – read on to learn more about how it’s all going to work this year!
Overwatch Contenders Update 2022 – Competing on Overwatch 2
Below, find a short list which summarizes some announcements in the press release by Blizzard Entertainment:
- Title to be played will in fact be Overwatch 2 with new hero Sojourn, new Push game mode and new maps
- Accordingly, all Contenders tournaments are now open-registration formats
- Top teams from 2021 directly invited to first Contenders event of 2022
- First tournaments for Contenders after Overwatch 2 PvP beta
- Prize pool of $1.3 million
- Events across regions: NA, Europe, China, South Korea and Australia/New Zealand
Accordingly, that covers everything.
These are great changes. Specifically, the ‘open format’ is the biggest change. By making the events more open, we’re more likely to have more teams participating, increasing competition levels and increasing talent.
Bearing this in mind, over the past years, Contenders has struggled. Blizzard addressing this by offering improvement is a great sign.
