The Indian Government alongside the Ministry of Information and Technology have just announced that the most popular app in India, PUBG Mobile is banned in India. Alongside the PUBG Mobile ban, they will also be banning 117 more Chinese mobile apps.
Why are the apps getting banned?
The Indian Government will be banning PUBG Mobile and the other 117 Chinese apps due to data security concerns. This is because there was tension between China and India in Eastern Ladakh’s border area. Due to Tencent being a Chinese company, the Indian Government has made this decision to, in a way, punish China due to their recent conflict.
PUBG Mobile banned in India – How will this ban affect the esports scene?
The game has been one of the leading Mobile esports, alongside other games like Clash Royale, Arena of Valor and Mobile Legends. It has over 734,000,000 downloads and around 100,000,000 players daily, which means that it is an extremely popular game. In fact, both TSM and Fnatic have made investments towards the Indian esports scene, particularly in PUBG Mobile. This is very unfortunate news for Fnatic as they were planning on expanding their Indian PUBG Mobile roster.
It’s a very sad day in esports, as a shutdown like this loses people their careers, jobs and dreams. PUBG Mobile getting banned in India is also going to affect all of the Indian competitive esports athletes. As nowadays they will have to think twice before heading into a career in gaming.
