On the 19th of March, Riot Games released a mobile version of their already very popular auto-battler, Teamfight Tactics. It has been made available on Android and iOS, but unfortunately not compatible with many old devices. Riot have stated that the minimum specifications for the app are of an iPhone 6S or newer for iOS while on Android it is required that a device consists of 2GB + of RAM, Version 7 of Android OS or newer, an Open GL Version 3+ and a 64-bit OS. Finally, TFT mobile version Android and iOS is a reality.
Something that’s really cool about it is that players have the choice of using their very own Riot account that they use for League of Legends, to sync it with TFT Android and iOS to gain access to their already owned ‘little legends’, arena skins, and the newly introduced ‘booms’. TFT also features cross-play between PC and mobile players, which definitely helps the game in terms of numbers, and not only increase the game’s overall popularity but unite the auto-battler community.
What made TFT so popular?
League of Legends, Riot Games’ main game, is considered by many as the most popular and most played esport, so it was very easy to convince many that Riot would be successful at creating a sub-game with the same storyline and lore that League has. The game has been out on PC since the 26th of June and is currently on its 3rd Season, Galaxies which has just released this week.
Could it be an esport?
While it is very hard to determine a game genre such as auto-battlers to be an esport, due to its random elements, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the potential to be a good mobile esport. As mentioned previously, the game’s mobile release will definitely increase the popularity of the game, which in-hand will raise wishes for future tournaments and events regarding TFT.
In fact, just like they did with Rise of the Elements, Riot Games have hosted an invitational tournament to celebrate their new season. This is a huge opportunity to discover how pro TFT players and streamers will adapt to the changes. Amongst the players were some community figures such as Scarra and Lothar, however, Li Luo managed to take the win in the end:
Where do we go from now?
TFT on mobile isn’t the only game Riot is intending to release in 2020. In an announcement that was part of the League of Legends 10 year anniversary, Riot announced that they will be releasing multiple games, of different genres. Some of the games are: A League of Legends fighting game, codenamed Project L, Legends of Runeterra, a card-based game and Valorant, a tactical FPS game.
