Accordingly, one of the toughest tasks for an esports organization is forming the perfect team. Indeed, many esports out there are team-based and require players working together with their own roles. Read on as we discuss this topic; everything you need to know about Player Roles in Esports Teams!

Player Roles in Esports Teams – Different Kinds

Considering how vast certain esports titles can be, individual players are often specialized and most effective at playing a certain role.

Indeed, the type of ‘role’ varies across multiple esports, those which are team-based. Let’s dive into multiple examples via some of the featured esports here on esportsguide:

Call of Duty: Vanguard – Teams of 4

Indeed, let’s take a look at an example in the franchised team of OpTic Chicago:

  • Initiator Submachine gun – this player is the first one into gunfights, makes space, plays aggressive and in SND, plants the bomb. Example: Anthony “Shotzzy” Castro.
  • Follow-up Submachine gun – follows up the initiator, more likely to play slower, finds routes and plays the objective. Example: Seth “Scump” Abner.
  • Flex – a player that swaps between a third submachine gun and a secondary assault rifle. Example: Indervir “iLLeY” Dhaliwal
  • Main Assault Rifle – holds down the sights and is the anchor of the team. Example: Brandon “Dashy” Otell

Furthermore, let’s look at the tactical shooter of VALORANT by using the organization of The Guard:

  • Duelist – utilize Duelist agents, create space, are the first ones in, rely on fragging, often run the Operator on Jett. Example: Ha “Sayaplayer” Jung-woo.
  • Sentinel – hold back enemies, lock down sites and gain information on the map. Example: Jonah “JonahP” Pulice.
  • Initiator – kick off rounds, support duelists, often have flash grenades. Example: Trent “trent” Cairns.
  • Controller – smoke of chokepoints, offer map control, allows for safe pushes. Example: Jacob “valyn” Batio.

Indeed, with 4 roles in a team of 5, teams have the choice of making unique compositions depending on the players and the particular map.

Accordingly, let’s move on to one of the most popular genres – MOBA. Here are how the roles work in a LoL team, as exemplified by Damwon Gaming:

  • Top/Tank – built to take a lot of damage, they help in being central to starting fights, finding space and targetting weaker enemy opponents such as Bot/ADC. Example: Noh “Burdol” Tae-yoon.
  • Jungler – shifting through the Jungle portion of the map between the three lanesm they focus on reaping gold and experience points in the Summoner’s Rift. Also, has a huge role in rotations and being in the right place. Example: Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu.
  • Mid/APC – giving out the most damage thanks to ranged attacks, the mid player is massively important as the middle lane controls rotations to all lanes. Example: Heo “ShowMaker” Su.
  • Support – usually helping the Bot/ADC player, they rely on hit points and help in team fights by create and reducing space. Example: Kim “Kellin” Hyeong-gyu.
  • Bot/ADC – known as the Marksman, the role offers high physical damage with low health and plays in the bottom lane of the map. Example: Seo “deokdam” Dae-gli.

Other Esports with Multiple Player Roles

Let’s conclude our examples with some other esports which work in the same way:

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • Dota 2
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Overwatch
  • Arena of Valor

However, not all team esports has an incredible focus on role. Indeed, esports such as Rocket League involves teams of 3 where all three players are equally important and have equal parts in competing with no specialties. Other examples include battle royale titles such as PUBG and Free Fire.

Player Roles in Esports – Essential for Rosters

Why is it worth having an idea on this topic?

Well, here on esportsguide we’re constantly covering roster changes. Indeed, rosters are constantly shuffling players, oftentimes to fulfil a particular role, to better their chances of winning.

As you can imagine – having the best players in their roles on the same team is a winning strategy. Usually, the best teams in an esport will have some of the best role players too.

However, we’ll conclude by outlining that team competition is more than individual role skill. Indeed, team chemistry, communication and many other factors determine a team’s success.
