Riot have just released a statement regarding the Vietnamese teams that will be missing out on Worlds 2020. Here is their statement:

Why will they not be able to attend?

Due to the current situation with our global pandemic, the Vietnamese government has implemented a lot of travel bans and restrictions. One of them being to Shanghai which automatically disallows them to compete in the 2020 World Championship. The teams involved are: GAM Esports, EVOS Esports, and Team Flash. In the VCS 2020 Summer Split, Team Flash had already arrived at the Grand Finals, whereas the other 2 were fighting for their spot in the Losers’ Finals.

Vietnamese teams missing out on Worlds 2020 – Why is it big news?

Back in August, Riot Games revealed their plans and format regarding the 2020 World Championship. This included all sorts of information, however with 2 teams dropping out of the World Championship, Riot will have to adjust the format to keep an exciting Play-In experience.

Here’s what Tom Martell, Director Of Operations at Riot Esports had to say:

We are incredibly disappointed on behalf of these teams who worked so hard all year for the chance to compete on the global stage. While it certainly will not replace the experience for them, we will be awarding them their full share of the prize pool as though they had participated in the event.

This is how the group stage is currently looking like with the newest adjustments:

Missing out on 2 very talented teams will surely impact Worlds 2020. As this year’s World’s championship was going to be the biggest League Of Legends event ever with the most teams competing. It’s an unfortunate situation for the Vietnamese teams, however hopefully the pandemic does not affect any other teams that are qualified for the World Championship.
